Of course, the cane hurt on the hand, but as such a small area could be hit, it was not done nearly so hard as on the bottom. Boys that have been caned both on the hands and their bottoms will say without doubt both hurt but it hurt a lot more on the bottom than the hand. In most cases, boys that were caned on the bottom received 4 or 6 strokes but a few only got 3. The age of the boy did not affect the number of strokes he got but would effect the force with which he was caned. An eight-year-old caught playing truant would get six strokes just the same as a twelve year old, but would not have it applied so hard.
