Megan grasped the severity of the situation within a moment of entering the house. She was able to walk right by her parents, dirty diaper and all, without them really noticing her. Nancy seemed deeply upset, Drew looked as if he had just bet his life savings at the track and came up short. Jeez!
She showered, cleaned herself up and went to check on her sister. Carrie was lying face down on the middle of her bed, doing a pretty good imitation of a murder victim.
“Did you talk to them yet?” she asked Megan in a low, hurt voice.
“Talk to who?” Megan asked without thinking.
“Mom and Dad. Who do you think?!”
“No. What did they do?”
She lifted herself from the bed and allowed Megan to look upon her tear-stricken face. “They disowned me.”
