Mum leant over to my grandmother and said in a hushed, “I think he wants to show off his new frock.”
“No, I don’t!” I retorted. “I’m not going out in this.”
“Well it’s entirely up to you Peter.” mum said in a matter of fact tone. “But if you do go out, make sure you’re back before dark, and be good!” she said before leaving.
As usual granny put the TV on for me. I ended up paying more attention to my knees emerging from my dress than I did the pictures on the screen. Being a Saturday afternoon, there was nothing much on; sport, more sport, and some old film. After a while I became bored, and obviously visibly so.
