(gap: 2s) Once upon a time, in the gentle village of Kettlewell, there lived a boy named Alexander. His father had sadly passed away when Alexander was very young, so his dear mother worked hard each day to provide for their little family.

(short pause) Alexander was fortunate, for next door lived the kindly Mr. and Mrs. Appleby, both teachers, who often cared for him during the school holidays. The Applebys had two children: a cheerful boy named Adam and his sweet sister, Eve.

(short pause) One bright summer morning, as the sun streamed through the open windows, Alexander heard a sudden commotion from the Applebys’ house. Adam was crying out, and the sound was accompanied by the unmistakable noise of a firm hand at work.

(pause) Curious, Alexander peered into the neighbour’s garden and saw Adam lying across his mother’s knee. Mrs. Appleby had rolled up her sleeves and sat upright on a sturdy wooden chair, her face set with gentle determination. Adam’s face was flushed with embarrassment, but he bravely stayed in place, knowing he had misbehaved. Mrs. Appleby raised her hand and delivered the first of twelve crisp, clear smacks to Adam’s bottom. Each smack rang out in the quiet morning air—one, two, three—each one firm but never cruel. Adam winced and let out a small yelp at the fourth, his legs kicking slightly, but he did not try to wriggle away. By the sixth smack, his eyes were brimming with tears, and by the ninth, he was softly sobbing, but he gripped the chair leg and bore it bravely. When the twelfth and final smack landed, Mrs. Appleby paused, resting her hand gently on Adam’s back. “There, Adam,” she said kindly, “let this be a lesson to you. Mischief brings consequences, but you are forgiven.” Adam sniffled, wiped his eyes, and nodded, understanding that the punishment was given out of love and a wish for him to grow into a good and honest boy. Mrs. Appleby then told Adam to go upstairs and think quietly about his actions.

(short pause) Alexander was quite astonished by what he had witnessed. He wondered what it would feel like to be punished in such a way, and a part of him was curious about the lesson Adam had learned.

(short pause) Alexander soon devised a plan involving Eve, for he admired her greatly, even though she was a little older than he.

(pause) A few days later, while playing with Eve at his house, Alexander decided to play a trick. He told Eve he had a surprise for her and asked her to close her eyes and hold out her hand. Giggling, Eve did as she was told. To Alexander’s shame, he placed something rather unpleasant in her hand.

(short pause) When Eve opened her eyes and saw what Alexander had done, she screamed in fright. Alexander immediately begged her not to tell anyone, but deep down, he suspected she would. He knew that such behaviour deserved a proper punishment, and he imagined Mrs. Appleby would be the one to deliver it.

(pause) The next day, while Alexander’s mother was at work, he was playing with Adam and Eve in their garden. Soon, Mrs. Appleby called Alexander indoors. Eve had told her mother everything. Mrs. Appleby asked Alexander if the story was true. Alexander hung his head and nodded, feeling very sorry indeed. “Please do not tell my mother,” he pleaded.

(short pause) Mrs. Appleby looked at Alexander kindly but firmly. “No, Alexander,” she said. “What you did was very naughty, and the only proper punishment is a well-smacked bottom. That is how children learn to behave.” Alexander, his voice trembling, replied, “Could you punish me instead? I do not wish for my mother to know.”

(short pause) Mrs. Appleby considered for a moment, then nodded. “Very well, Alexander. But you must promise never to do such a thing again. Do you promise?” Alexander nodded solemnly, feeling a mixture of shame and resolve.

(pause) Mrs. Appleby sat down on a sturdy dining chair and placed Alexander gently across her knee. She explained, “You will receive ten firm smacks, Alexander, so you remember to always be kind and honest.” Alexander’s heart thudded in his chest as Mrs. Appleby adjusted his position, making sure he was safe and comfortable. She raised her hand and delivered the first smack—sharp, but not harsh—across the seat of his shorts. Alexander gasped at the sting, his hands gripping the chair leg. The second and third smacks followed, each one a little reminder of his mischief. By the fourth, Alexander’s eyes were wide, and by the fifth, a tear slipped down his cheek. Mrs. Appleby paused, her voice gentle: “You are a good boy, Alexander, but you must learn.” She continued, delivering the sixth, seventh, and eighth smacks, each one measured and fair. Alexander whimpered softly, but he did not struggle. The ninth and tenth smacks landed, and Alexander let out a quiet sob, feeling both the sting and the lesson. When it was over, Mrs. Appleby rested her hand on his back and spoke kindly: “You have taken your punishment bravely. Remember, kindness and honesty are always best.”

(short pause) With a steady hand, Mrs. Appleby helped Alexander to his feet. His cheeks were damp with tears, but he felt a strange sense of relief, as if a great weight had been lifted. Mrs. Appleby smiled gently and said, “You have learned your lesson, Alexander. Good children sometimes make mistakes, but they always try to do better.”

(short pause) When the punishment was finished, Mrs. Appleby helped Alexander to his feet and told him kindly, “You have taken your punishment well. Remember, good children are always truthful and kind.”

(short pause) Alexander’s mother never learned of the incident, and Alexander kept his promise to behave better in the future.

(pause) The next day, Eve confided in Alexander that she, too, had received a punishment for joining in the mischief. Mrs. Appleby had given Eve six firm smacks on her bottom that evening, explaining that even those who encourage naughtiness must learn to do what is right. Eve described how she had felt nervous as her mother sat her down and explained the reason for the punishment. Each of the six smacks was clear and fair, and though Eve cried a little, she understood that her mother wished her to grow up honest and kind. Alexander thought this was rather strict, but he understood the lesson.

(short pause) And so, Alexander, Adam, and Eve learned that mischief and unkindness always bring consequences, but that forgiveness and kindness are never far behind. In the gentle village of Oakhaven-on-the-Moor, the children grew wiser, and their hearts grew kinder, with every lesson learned.
