I tried on a lot of the new stuff in the bedroom with mum watching approvingly and making suggestions every now and then about what would go nicely with what.
Soon it was time to put it all away in the cupboards and draws before dad got back and clean up make-up and wipe off the sweet smells of the perfumes I had been trying out. I really hated it when James had to come back for a while, just so dad would not suspect anything. But, for now, it had to be done.
